The Supreme Court will hear a plea calling for a structured mechanism to ensure postgraduate medical seats in pre-clinical and para-clinical branches do not remain vacant across colleges in India.
The petition also seeks five-year data on unfilled seats in pre-clinical and para-clinical branches.
The current petition aims to push for a long-term corrective mechanism rather than temporary fixes. By seeking five-year vacancy data, it attempts to establish a clear pattern of how many seats, especially in pre-clinical and para-clinical branches, have remained unutilised.
The issue of unused medical seats has been repeatedly flagged before the apex court. While hearing a separate plea in January this year, the court had remarked that seats in medical courses cannot remain vacant, and that steps must be taken to prevent such wastage of resources and training opportunities.
The court’s decision on this matter could lead to significant reforms in medical education, particularly in areas that have historically received fewer applicants despite their importance in the healthcare system.
